Akeed Observatory Records 93 Rumors During July

AMMAN, August 1 (Petra) -- The Jordanian Media Credibility Observatory (Akeed), an initiative of the Jordan Media Institute funded by the King Abdullah II Fund for Development, recorded ninety-three rumors during the month of July.

In its monthly report issued on Saturday, the observatory introduced a new monthly index tracking rumor density by comparing the number of recorded rumors during the month against the twelve-month historical average.

The index showed that the ninety-three rumors recorded in July fell below the twelve-month baseline average of one04 rumors, marking a decrease of eleven rumors or approximately 10.7 percent, reflecting a drop in rumor density compared to normal baseline periods.

Political rumors topped the monitoring list with twenty-five instances, accounting for 26.9 percent of the total. Economic rumors followed in second place with twenty-two instances at 23.6 percent, security-related rumors ranked third with seventeen instances at 18.3 percent, public affairs placed fourth with thirteen instances at 14 percent, social topics recorded nine instances at 9.7 percent, and health-related subjects registered seven instances at 7.5 percent.

The data indicated that political, economic, and security sectors combined accounted for sixty-four rumors, representing 68.8 percent of the total monitoring volume. Furthermore, sixty-eight rumors originated from domestic sources, accounting for 73.1 percent of the total, compared to twenty-five rumors from external sources at 26.9 percent.

Social media platforms served as the primary vehicle for propagation, disseminating sixty-five rumors or 69.9 percent of the total monitored volume, while traditional media outlets accounted for twenty-eight rumors or 30.1 percent.

Cross-referencing publishing channels with origin sources revealed that out of the sixty-eight domestically sourced rumors, fifty-three were propagated via social media platforms compared to fifteen through traditional media, indicating that roughly 77.9 percent of domestic rumors spread digitally.

The observatory noted that fifty-eight of the ninety-three recorded rumors were officially refuted during July, representing a 62.4 percent refutation rate, while thirty-five rumors remained unrefuted at 37.6 percent.
