Amman, October 6 (Petra) – Amman Design Week has launched the "Nuzul" project, featuring 13 birdhouses installed at various locations in Jabal Al-Weibdeh and Ras Al-Ain to provide safe resting spaces for migratory birds passing through the city.
Thirteen designers and design teams created the birdhouses as part of an initiative inspired by the idea of extending Jordan’s tradition of hospitality to birds, given the Kingdom’s location along a major regional migration route.
The project takes its name from "Nuzul," referring to a place where travelers stop to rest. Visitors attending Amman Design Week, which runs from October 2 to 17, can explore the birdhouses at different locations and consider their relationship to design, the environment and the urban landscape.
Amman Design Week Co-Director Sarah Hijazin said the tradition of welcoming travelers is "deeply rooted in our culture," noting that millions of birds cross Jordan’s skies each year during seasonal migrations.
"Nuzul," she added, poses the question of whether the city can provide birds with places to land and rest during their journeys.
Jordan lies along important migration routes between Europe, Asia and Africa, with large numbers of birds of prey, storks and songbirds passing through the Jordan Valley in spring and autumn.
Several of the birdhouses were designed with specific species in mind. In "Sparrow Building" (Binayat Al-Douri), Omar Darwish transforms the birdhouse into a miniature residential structure for sparrows.
Jessica Aziza and Yasmine Tamas created "In the Nectar of the City of Cities’ Flower" (Fi Raheeq Zahrat Al-Mada'in), a pair of houses for Palestine sunbirds inspired by the crevices and openings of Jerusalem’s stone architecture.
Nada Barqawi’s "Sinw" draws on the natural hollows found in trees, with a design intended to blend into its host tree and featuring a mosaic surface layered over clay.
The project features works by Abdullah Tabaza, Bahreini-Danish, Lina Qassisieh, Yasmine Mansour, Mariam Arwa, Nadia Abu Jabara, Rand Abdul-Jabbar, Raya Sha'ban, Salwa Khudairi, Talin Hazbar and Zaid Wahbeh.
The "Nuzul" birdhouses are spread across Amman Design Week venues, inviting visitors to explore the relationship between design, the city and the natural environment.
Amman Design Week runs through October 17, with schedules and locations available on the event’s official website.
