Irbid, April 18 (Petra)-- Minister of Culture Mustafa Rawashdeh officially inaugurated the "Bani Obeid: District of Jordanian Culture 2026" festival on Saturday at the Irbid Cultural Center. The ceremony was attended by former Prime Minister Bisher Khasawneh, Minister of Local Administration Walid Masri, and a broad assembly of senior officials and intellectuals.
In his opening address, Rawashdeh highlighted the historical and intellectual depth of the Bani Obeid district. He described the region as a vital pillar of the Jordanian state since its founding, noting its rich contributions to politics, education, economics, and the arts. He specifically pointed to the district's archaeological significance, housing Roman and Byzantine sites that were once part of the Decapolis cities.
The minister emphasized that the National Cultural Cities and Districts program is a cornerstone of comprehensive and sustainable development. He noted that the initiative provides local communities and cultural institutions with a platform to discover and nurture youth talent while fostering creative industries that contribute to local economic empowerment.
Ali Al-Hawamdeh, the Administrative Governor of Bani Obeid, stated that the selection of the district for 2026 reflects its prestigious standing as a hub for literature and thought. He confirmed that the coming year would be filled with diverse creative activities designed to bridge cultural communication and reinforce national identity.
Khaldoun Nuseir, General Coordinator of the district’s cultural bodies, added that the designation was the result of a long-term commitment to the belief that culture is a responsibility and a shared future rather than a luxury.
The launch event featured performances by the Jordan Armed Forces musical band, poetry readings by Harbi Al-Masri and Tay Hatamleh, and a documentary film titled "Cultural Life in Bani Obeid." The festivities also included traditional musical segments performed by the Al-Husn Forum for Heritage and Arts, featuring songs by the late singer Tawfiq Nimri, followed by a performance by singer Hussein Salman.
On the sidelines of the celebration, Rawashdeh opened an exhibition showcasing local heritage, handicrafts, and fine arts, alongside a display of the Ministry of Culture’s latest publications. The ceremony began with the minister lighting the festival torch, signaling the official start of the district’s cultural calendar for 2026.
