NCCD Strengthens Integration of Green Education into Jordanian Curricula

Amman, July 20 (Petra) -- The National Center for Curriculum Development and Evaluation ( (NCCD) is working to further embed green education and sustainability concepts into school curricula as part of ongoing efforts to develop curriculum frameworks and promote environmental awareness among students.

In a statement issued Monday, the center said green education has become an important educational and national priority aimed at preparing students to better understand environmental and climate challenges facing Jordan and respond to them responsibly. The approach seeks to move beyond learning about sustainability concepts by encouraging their practical application in daily life and involvement in environmental activities at schools and in communities.

The center noted that environmental themes are already included in existing Jordanian curricula, with textbooks covering issues related to water, energy, natural resources, recycling, ecological balance, weather, climate, and water scarcity.

It explained that these concepts are presented through an integrated approach that connects knowledge with values and everyday practices. Environmental topics are addressed through subjects such as social studies, earth and environmental sciences, and population and resource studies, while national and civic education promotes initiatives related to volunteering, waste separation, recycling, and tree planting.

The center added that Islamic education reinforces values linked to caring for the environment, cleanliness, and reducing waste, while mathematics helps students analyze issues related to sustainability through data and percentages, including water and energy consumption and pollution levels.

The new direction focuses on linking environmental concepts with practical activities, including assessing water and energy use, examining the impact of waste, developing solutions to local environmental challenges, and carrying out school-based initiatives. It also connects learning to Jordan’s environmental priorities, including water scarcity, solar energy, desertification, biodiversity, protected areas, the Dead Sea, and climate-smart agriculture.

The center emphasized that green education does not require introducing a separate subject into the curriculum, but rather integrating climate and sustainability concepts across subjects and grade levels to help students develop critical thinking, practical skills, and a sense of responsibility toward their environment and society.
