Declaring Baptism Site as nature reserve reinforces its status as global tourism destination

Amman, Oct. 20 (Petra) -- Declaring the Baptism Site of Jesus Christ (Al-Maghtas) a natural reserve marks a key milestone in elevating its regional and international tourism profile by integrating religious, cultural, and ecotourism, highlighting its biodiversity alongside its historical significance and status as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Cabinet approved on Tuesday adding Al-Maghtas to the national network of protected areas, designating it as a 10-square-kilometer natural reserve and initiating regulatory procedures in conjunction with preparations for the 2,000th anniversary of the Baptism of Jesus Christ in 2030.

Hakam Shatnawi, Professor of Tourism and Hospitality Management at Yarmouk University, told the Jordan News Agency (Petra) that designating the site as a nature reserve is a strategic step that strengthens its religious, historical, and global tourism standing, particularly as one of the world's foremost Christian pilgrimage sites.

Shatnawi explained that the decision enhances environmental protection and biodiversity around the site, providing a framework to regulate tourism activities and ensure sustainability. He added that aligning the designation with preparations for the 2030 bicentennial presents an opportunity to boost international promotion and solidify Jordan's position on the global religious tourism map.

He noted that the reserve status diversifies Jordan's tourism offerings by blending religious, cultural, and ecotourism. This approach is set to attract new visitor segments and extend length-of-stay metrics through tailored itineraries connecting Al-Maghtas with the Dead Sea, Madaba, Mount Nebo, and other historical sites.

Tourism investor and industry expert Osama Abu Taleb emphasized that the designation converts environmental preservation and religious heritage into added value for the tourism sector and the local economy. He highlighted that the decision encourages specialized investments that preserve the site's authenticity while enhancing the visitor experience.

Abu Taleb stressed the necessity of implementing a clear management plan to regulate visitor flows and investments in line with the site's carrying capacity. He added that the reserve unlocks opportunities for sustainable tourism projects including visitor centers, nature trails, specialized guiding, small lodges, and local craft initiatives thereby creating jobs and supporting local community development.
