Amman, Nov. 1 (Petra) -- The Jordan Standards and Metrology Organization (JSMO) participated in international meetings in Kazan, Russia, to advance cooperation on standards, accreditation and metrology and improve market access for Jordanian products.
Acting Director General Wafa Al-Momani headed Jordan’s delegation to the 21st General Assembly and 32nd Board of Directors meetings of the Standards and Metrology Institute for Islamic Countries (SMIIC), held Oct. 26-28 in the Republic of Tatarstan.
The meetings brought together representatives of member states and regional and international organizations working in accreditation, standards and metrology, JSMO said in a statement Sunday.
Al-Momani said participation enables Jordan to help shape SMIIC’s policies, decisions and future work programs while ensuring that national interests and priorities are reflected.
She highlighted the importance of developing technical requirements for halal products and services, reducing technical barriers to trade and facilitating Jordanian products’ access to member states’ markets.
Jordan’s engagement with international and regional standardization bodies also strengthens its national quality infrastructure and helps align Jordanian standards with regional and international benchmarks, improving the competitiveness of local products, she said.
The statement noted SMIIC’s growing role in developing halal industries and promoting related standards in food, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics and halal tourism, sectors experiencing rapid regional and global growth.
Participants reviewed the institute’s achievements and progress in implementing its strategic plans. They adopted the 2027-2028 executive plan to strengthen trade among Islamic countries and facilitate the movement of goods across their markets.
The meetings also reviewed progress reports from SMIIC’s three permanent councils: the Standardization Management Council, Accreditation Council and Metrology Council.
The Jordanian delegation participated in meetings of the Strategy Committee and Governance Committee, discussing the institute’s future direction and its response to global developments. Discussions also covered regulatory and legislative frameworks, governance practices, transparency and institutional accountability.
Jordan has served on SMIIC’s board since the institute’s establishment in 2010, winning election to successive terms and contributing to cooperation among member states in standardization, accreditation and metrology.
