Beirut, April 18 (Petra) – The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) said on Saturday that one of its patrols came under light arms fire while carrying out a mission to remove unexploded ordnance in Ghandouriyeh in southern Lebanon, which left one peacekeeper dead and injured three others, two critically.
In a statement, UNIFIL said the incident occurred during the re-establishment of its positions, and that an official investigation was underway.
The Lebanese army condemned the shooting and opened an investigation to identify those responsible. Lebanese President Joseph Aoun received a call from French President Emmanuel Macron, and said the necessary measures will be taken to hold those involved accountable.
