Amman, Feb. 27 (Petra)-- A new U.S. public opinion survey shows that 57 percent of Americans support the establishment of an independent Palestinian state alongside Israel.

According to the latest poll conducted by the U.S. research company Gallup, there has been a noticeable shift in Americans’ attitudes toward Israel and Palestine compared with previous years.

Among Democrats, 65 percent said they sympathize more with the Palestinians, compared to 17 percent who expressed greater sympathy for Israel, with no significant change recorded within this group.

Among Republicans, 70 percent reported greater sympathy for Israel, while 13 percent said they sympathize more with the Palestinians. However, support for Israel within this group declined by 10 percentage points compared to 2024, marking its lowest level since 2004, according to international news agencies.

Independents emerged as the key driver of change this year. Some 41 percent said they sympathize more with the Palestinians, compared to 30 percent who favor Israel. In previous years, independents leaned toward Israel by 42 percent to 34 percent for Palestine.

Among young adults aged 18 to 34, 53 percent expressed greater sympathy for the Palestinians, while support for Israel fell to 23 percent the lowest level recorded. Notably, a majority in this age group reported this stance for the first time.

In the 35–54 age group, 46 percent said they sympathize more with the Palestinians, compared to 28 percent for Israel. In 2025, this group had leaned toward Israel by 45 percent to 33 percent for Palestine.

Among those aged 55 and older, 49 percent expressed greater sympathy for Israel, compared to 31 percent for the Palestinians. This marks the first time since 2005 that support for Israel among this age group has fallen below half.

Overall, 57 percent of respondents said they support the creation of an independent Palestinian state alongside Israel, while 28 percent oppose the idea and 15 percent expressed no opinion.

By party affiliation, 77 percent of Democrats support the idea, along with 57 percent of independents and 33 percent of Republicans.
