Academics Highlight National Priorities in King's Speech from the Throne

ZARQA, Nov. 3 (Petra) -- Academics and specialists said the Speech from the Throne delivered by His Majesty King Abdullah II at the opening of the ordinary session of Parliament outlined key national, political and economic priorities for the coming period.

Dr. Anas Khalayleh, head of the Zarqa branch of the Reform Party, said Jordanians followed the speech with great interest, noting that its messages reaffirmed the Kingdom’s national principles and priorities. He highlighted the King's emphasis on national unity, confidence in Jordanians, rejecting extremism and terrorism, and confronting any attempts to undermine the country's security.

Khalayleh also pointed to the role of the Jordan Armed Forces-Arab Army and security agencies in protecting the Kingdom and safeguarding its sovereignty, expressing hope that Jordan would remain a place of security and stability.

Dr. Abdulkarim Al-Suwailmeen said the speech addressed the protection of the domestic front through efforts to confront terrorism and extremist groups, honor those killed in the line of duty, and uphold state authority and the rule of law. He also highlighted the King's emphasis that no one should be exempt from accountability for abusing public office, describing public service as a responsibility rather than a privilege.

He further noted the speech's reaffirmation of Jordan's position on the Palestinian cause and the Hashemite Custodianship, stressing that regional security cannot be achieved without safeguarding the rights of the Palestinian people. He also highlighted water security as a national priority and Parliament's role in legislation and oversight, alongside the importance of respectful debate.

Dr. Harbi Rahhamneh said the King had called on Parliament to represent citizens, protect the public interest and oversee government performance.

He added that achieving justice and equality requires fair legislation, effective parliamentary oversight, accountability for officials, protection of public funds and respect for citizens' rights. He also noted that the speech linked development to people's daily needs, including education, healthcare, employment opportunities and public services, while stressing the importance of equal opportunities across the Kingdom's governorates and reaffirming the central importance of the Palestinian cause.

Dr. Abdullah Qudah said the speech stressed the need to strengthen justice and the rule of law, continue combating corruption and ensure accountability without exception, emphasising that public office is a national responsibility dedicated to serving citizens.

He also underlined the importance of protecting Jordanians' right to express their views and participate in national dialogue responsibly and respectfully. He said the speech set out priorities focused on maintaining national stability, advancing reform and modernisation, achieving comprehensive development and strengthening trust between the state and society.

Dr. Mohammad Al-Sha'ar said the speech came at a critical time for the region and reaffirmed Jordan's commitment to remaining strong and united in facing challenges. He noted its emphasis on protecting national security, stability and unity, and highlighted the role of public awareness, social cohesion, the Arab Army and security agencies in safeguarding the country.

He added that terrorism would not weaken the determination of Jordanians or the resilience of the state.

Dr. Amin Shdaifat, a member of the central council of the National Charter Party, said the speech addressed key issues, including confronting terrorism and honouring the martyrs of Karak. He stressed that Jordan's security and national unity are fundamental to its strength and described the Armed Forces and security agencies as a source of pride.

Shdaifat also highlighted the King's reaffirmation of Jordan's position on the Palestinian people's right to their land in the face of Israeli expansionist ambitions.

He further stressed that water security is a national priority and that Jordanian water needs should not be left at the mercy of any party. He said Parliament should represent the nation, protect citizens' interests and oversee government performance, adding that public office is a responsibility entrusted to those serving the country and its people.
