Agriculture minister, ESCWA representative discuss strengthening cooperation

Amman, July 28 (Petra) – Minister of Agriculture, Dr. Saeb Khraisat, met with the United Nations Under-Secretary-General and Executive Secretary of the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) in Jordan, Dr. Rania Al-Mashat, to discuss ways to strengthen cooperation and several issues of common interest that serve the Kingdom's sustainable development priorities.
According to a statement issued by the Ministry of Agriculture on Tuesday, Khraisat noted the importance of the partnership with ESCWA in supporting Jordan's efforts to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.
In this context, he said priority particularly goes to the agricultural and rural sectors, enhanced food security, sustainable management of natural resources, capacity building, and ways to benefit from the ESCWA's technical expertise provided to member states.
Khraisat also reviewed the Ministry of Agriculture's efforts in implementing the Economic Modernization Vision, and steps to develop the Kingdom's agricultural sector, and strengthen its ability to address the challenges of climate change and water scarcity.
For her part, Al-Mashat affirmed ESCWA 's commitment to continuing cooperation with the Ministry of Agriculture, providing technical support and capacity building, and enhancing the implementation of programs and projects that contribute to achieving Sustainable Development Goals, in line with Jordan's national priorities and its Economic Modernization Vision.
The two sides discussed cooperation prospects in the areas of food security, the green economy, climate-smart agriculture, sustainable water management, support for innovation and digital transformation in the agricultural sector.
Talks also went over visions to prepare economic studies and policies, and empower women and youth in rural areas, which all contribute to achieving comprehensive and sustainable development.
