Ajloun, April 5 (Petra) -- Churches across the Ajloun governorate celebrated Palm Sunday on Sunday, holding services characterized by a spiritual atmosphere that underscored Jordan’s long-standing traditions of religious coexistence and social harmony.
The celebrations, which mark the beginning of Holy Week, featured traditional processions where congregants carried olive and palm branches to symbolize peace and humility.
Father Yousef Francis, pastor of the Our Lady of the Mount Church, said the occasion carries profound spiritual significance. He noted that the church remains committed to instilling values of tolerance and love, which serve as the foundation for the community's collective identity.
The Governor of Ajloun, Nayef Al-Hadayat, said local authorities had ensured all necessary measures were in place to provide a secure environment for the religious observances. He emphasized that such occasions highlight Jordan’s role as a global model for interfaith harmony and national cohesion.
Muawiya Annab, head of the Ajloun Governorate Council committee, described the local celebrations as a reflection of the deep-rooted ties between different segments of society. He stated that Ajloun represents a living example of religious pluralism, where citizens participate in various religious milestones with mutual respect.
Former Member of Parliament Bilal Momani added that the observance of Palm Sunday provides an opportunity to strengthen social bonds and reject extremism, reinforcing the concepts of shared living and brotherhood that define the Jordanian state.
Echoing these sentiments, former lawmaker Salma Al Rabadi expressed hope that the occasion would bring continued stability to the kingdom. She noted that the holiday serves as a vital bridge for social communication and the renewal of communal affection.
From an environmental perspective, Feryal Haddad, a member of the "Environment Unites Us" initiative, highlighted the importance of sustainable practices during the festivities. She urged participants to be mindful of the environment while using palm and olive branches, linking spiritual values to the responsible stewardship of Jordan’s natural resources.
