Aqaba, Feb. 2 (Petra) - Commissioner for Environment and Public Safety at the Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority (ASEZA), Nedal Al-Ouran, affirmed the authority’s commitment to enhancing public safety and reducing risks across all sectors in the zone, to protect lives, property, and the environment, while ensuring the sustainability of economic, tourism, and service activities.
Al-Ouran made his remarks during the opening of discussions on the "Draft Public Safety and Risk Reduction Regulation in the Aqaba Special Economic Zone," organized by ASEZA’s Directorate of Environmental Protection and Sustainability. The event brought together around 68 entities from various sectors, including legislative, governmental, military, and private-sector bodies, as part of a participatory approach aimed at developing an approved reference framework for regulating and implementing public health and safety standards. The draft aligns with Jordanian national legislation and strengthens compliance with safety and risk reduction requirements in the zone.
Al-Ouran explained that the regulation seeks to enhance emergency response efficiency, reduce accidents, protect workers and visitors from injuries, strengthen compliance with applicable Jordanian laws and regulations, and improve emergency and rapid response systems. He stressed that the initiative also promotes partnership and integration with relevant stakeholders, contributing to higher public safety standards and supporting sustainable development through the provision of a safe working environment.
Meanwhile, Director of the Environmental Protection and Sustainability Directorate at ASEZA, Taghreed Al-Maaytah, reviewed key components of the draft regulation, its legal basis, and the procedures related to non-compliance by establishments. She also highlighted the authority’s role in implementation and follow-up, the obligations of facilities dealing with hazardous and chemical materials, the responsibilities of employers and workers, the scope of application, and the role of supporting entities in enforcement. She emphasized the importance of adhering to occupational health and safety standards to ensure a safe, accident-free workplace.
