Atieh urges 'unified' Arab stance to address regional challenges

Amman, April 15 (Petra) – First Deputy Speaker of Lower House, Dr. Khamis Atieh, urged "unified" Arab positions in confronting escalating regional challenges.

Atieh's call came during his participation in the coordination meeting of the Arab Group on the sidelines of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) General Assembly in Istanbul, Türkiye.

Atieh stated the region is battling a "critical" phase amid an escalation of tensions and attacks that affect sovereignty and security of Arab states.

Talking at the event, he stressed rejection and condemnation of any foreign interference or violations that threaten Arab national security, mainly Iranian attacks on some Arab territories and Jordan.

Noting danger of the continued escalation in some Arab countries, he expressed his hope that stability will prevail in Sudan and Lebanon.

He called for adhering to the principles of good neighborliness and non-interference in the internal affairs of states, in accordance with the rules of international law and the Charter of the United Nations.

Additionally, he affirmed the Palestinian cause remains the top challenge facing the region, citing the ongoing violations of the Israeli occupation against the Palestinian people in Gaza Strip and West Bank.

These violations include attacks on civilians and infrastructure and obstruction of humanitarian relief efforts, he pointed out.

Atieh warned: "Continuation of these policies by various parties would only exacerbate the cycle of violence and undermine the prospects for stability." He called for forging a "unified" Arab stance that would contribute to halting violations and achieving a "comprehensive" ceasefire.

He stressed the necessity of unifying Arab efforts in international and parliamentary forums to strengthen capabilities to defend Arab causes.

Atieh reiterated his condemnation of the attacks targeting Jordan and other Arab states.

In closing remarks, he emphasized the Kingdom's pivotal role, under King Abdullah II's leadership, in protecting Jerusalem's Islamic and Christian holy sites under Hashemite custodianship and its political and humanitarian support for the Palestinian people.
