Amman, May 27 (Petra)-- Saleh Al-Khawaldah - Azerbaijani Ambassador to Jordan Shahin Abdullayev affirmed that his country attaches great importance to its brotherly relations with Jordan, noting that diplomatic ties between the two nations have witnessed continuous development since the early years of Azerbaijan’s independence.
In remarks to the Jordan News Agency (Petra) on the occasion of Azerbaijan’s National Day, the ambassador said Jordanian-Azerbaijani relations continue to grow under the leadership of His Majesty King Abdullah II and President Ilham Aliyev, reflecting the deep mutual respect, friendship and cooperation between the two countries.
He pointed to an intensive exchange of high-level visits and contacts between the leaderships of both nations in recent years, adding that bilateral trade volume reached approximately $6.5 million in 2024.
He stressed that both sides are working to increase this figure and expand economic and investment cooperation.
Abdullayev said around 56 agreements, memoranda of understanding and executive cooperation programs have been signed between the two countries across various sectors.
He also highlighted the fourth session of the Jordanian-Azerbaijani Joint Committee for Trade, Economic and Technical Cooperation, held in Baku on November 26–27, 2025, co-chaired by Jordan’s Minister of Industry, Trade and Supply and Azerbaijan’s Finance Minister, describing its outcomes as fruitful.
The ambassador added that cooperation between chambers of commerce in both countries is ongoing to establish a Jordanian-Azerbaijani Business Council aimed at strengthening private-sector partnerships and encouraging joint investments.
He noted that future cooperation is expected to expand in strategic sectors, including petroleum products, raw materials, agriculture, pharmaceuticals and defense industries, reflecting the growing economic partnership between the two countries.
On tourism, Abdullayev said bilateral cooperation in the sector has seen notable progress through initiatives aimed at boosting tourism exchange and benefiting from opportunities available in both countries. He noted that seasonal charter flights between Amman and Baku have operated in recent years, helping stimulate tourism and cultural exchange.
He added that efforts are currently underway to launch regular direct flights between Baku and Amman in cooperation with airlines from both countries, which would further enhance tourism, trade and investment ties.
The ambassador also revealed that an Azerbaijani tourism delegation, including representatives from the State Tourism Agency and tourism-sector institutions, is scheduled to visit Jordan next June to hold workshops, tour tourist sites and discuss future cooperation prospects with Jordanian officials.
Speaking about his country’s development, Abdullayev said Azerbaijan has overcome major challenges while preserving its national identity and strengthening its international standing. He stressed that Azerbaijan has proven over the decades its ability to protect and reinforce its independence, describing it as the nation’s greatest treasure.
He said the Republic of Azerbaijan laid the foundations of a modern state and parliamentary traditions, granted women the right to vote and established the principle of equality among citizens. Despite its short lifespan, he noted, the republic gained international recognition and contributed to promoting democratic concepts and institution-building.
The ambassador added that after independence, Azerbaijan continued implementing strategic projects in the fields of energy and transport, enhancing its economic and regional position.
He said President Ilham Aliyev continues to pursue modernization and development policies through strengthening infrastructure, expanding gas exports to European markets and supporting green energy and technology projects.
He also highlighted Azerbaijan’s growing role in international cooperation and its hosting of major global events, reflecting its increasing presence on the regional and international stages.
