Amman, June 23 (Petra) -- The Council of Church Leaders in Jordan convened at the Greek Orthodox Archbishopric to discuss the Cabinet’s recent decision approving the validating reasons for the draft amended Christian Community Councils Law of 2026.
The step serves as a prelude to referring the draft law to the Legislation and Opinion Bureau, moving it forward through the necessary constitutional and legal stages for formal enactment in accordance with standard procedures.
In a statement released on Tuesday, the Council of Church Leaders expressed its profound satisfaction with the decision. The council highly commended the extensive efforts exerted by the government, under the leadership of Prime Minister Jafar Hassan, and the members of the Cabinet in overseeing and approving this file. It noted that the amendments will help enhance justice, safeguard the legal rights of church congregations, and foster stability and peace of mind among Christian families in the Kingdom.
The council emphasized that this achievement aligns with Jordan's deeply rooted approach to respecting religious pluralism and preserving rights and freedoms. This approach, it added, thrives under the wise Hashemite leadership, which has consistently served as an exemplary model in reinforcing citizenship values, the rule of law, coexistence, and national unity among all segments of Jordanian society.
Furthermore, the council stressed the vital importance of maintaining unity within the Christian community and fostering a spirit of cooperation and integration among all churches. It noted that such solidarity supports their spiritual and national mission and reflects their shared responsibility toward their congregations and the homeland.
Reaffirming its absolute respect for the constitutional and legal track governing these amendments, the council underscored the importance of maintaining dialogue through official and legislative channels. This collaborative process aims to achieve a comprehensive legal framework that serves the public interest and protects the rights of all parties within a transparent and mutually respectful environment.
