Amman, Sept. 15 (Petra) -- International climate financing and technology transfer are being channeled into modernizing the Kingdom’s air-conditioning and refrigeration industry, as manufacturers move toward more efficient production technologies with a lower environmental impact.
Environment Minister Ayman Suleiman said Tuesday that closer cooperation with the private sector is essential to accelerating the transition to sustainable cooling technologies while strengthening industrial competitiveness and creating new opportunities for green investment.
His remarks came during a visit to Petra Engineering Industries Company alongside a delegation from the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) to review production-line upgrades carried out under projects associated with the Montreal Protocol.
Suleiman said cooperation between the ministry and manufacturers has enabled companies to access technical, financial and technological support available through international programs for ozone and climate protection.
Petra Engineering was among the first local manufacturers to participate in these programs, using the support to upgrade production lines and introduce more efficient and sustainable technologies in its air-conditioning and refrigeration operations.
Suleiman said such projects allow international environmental commitments to serve a broader industrial objective by helping manufacturers improve efficiency, keep pace with changes in global cooling technologies and strengthen the market position of locally produced goods.
He stressed that the private sector is a key partner in environmental and climate action, particularly as new international standards and technologies reshape the cooling industry.
The ministry’s National Ozone Unit is implementing the programs in partnership with UNIDO, with financing from the Multilateral Fund for the Implementation of the Montreal Protocol. The work falls within the Kingdom’s obligations under the Vienna Convention, the Montreal Protocol and the Kigali Amendment.
Suleiman said climate finance can provide an additional source of investment for industrial modernization, combining reductions in environmental and climate impact with gains in productivity and competitiveness.
During the visit, Suleiman and the UNIDO delegation inspected manufacturing lines and technological upgrades at Petra Engineering and were briefed on the results of previous modernization projects, as well as challenges and investment opportunities facing the air-conditioning and refrigeration industry.
He said the ministry would continue working with industrial companies and international partners to secure financing, technical support and technology transfer, helping local manufacturers adopt global advances in cooling technology, reduce their environmental footprint and expand opportunities for green investment and employment.
