Amman, January 11 (Petra) – The Kingdom will gradually be affected tomorrow evening, Monday, by a strong low-pressure system centered over Cyprus, the Jordan Meteorology Department (JMD) announced Sunday.

The extreme weather will bring a shift in weather conditions from partly cloudy to cloudy, with rainfall expected in the northern and central regions, as well as parts of the southwestern areas.

Rainfall is forecast to be heavy at times during the late night hours and may be accompanied by thunderstorms and hail. Southwesterly winds will be active, with strong gusts reaching speeds of 60–70 km/h.

The JMD warned of a risk of flash floods during the late night hours in valleys and low-lying areas of the northern and central regions, including the northern and central Jordan Valley.

It cautioned against strong winds and dust storms that may reduce horizontal visibility in desert areas, as well as reduced nighttime visibility caused by fog and low clouds touching the ground over mountain highlands.

It urged Jordanians to take necessary precautions, particularly against slippery roads with the onset of rainfall. It advised wearing warm clothing, using heating appliances safely and paying special attention to the elderly and children, who are most vulnerable to the cold.

The department indicated that by dawn on Tuesday, the extreme weather will intensify as a very cold polar air mass moves in, leading to a sharp drop in temperatures.

Weather conditions will be very cold, cloudy and rainy across most regions, with occasional heavy rainfall that may be accompanied by thunderstorms and hail in some areas.

Snow showers are possible over high mountain peaks, sometimes mixed with rain, with limited accumulation expected on the high southern mountains, particularly the Al Sharah range.

Westerly winds will remain active, with strong gusts of up to 60–70 km/h, causing dust to rise in desert regions.
