Amman, May 7 (Petra) – Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Ayman Safadi on Thursday received European Commissioner for the Mediterranean, Dubravka Šuica.
Safadi and Šuica discussed ways to enhance the "strategic" partnership between the Kingdom and the European Union, mechanisms for expanding cooperation in various fields, and the region's developments and efforts to achieve security and stability.
Safadi and Šuica reviewed the latest developments on Jordanian-European Investment Conference scheduled to be held in the Kingdom before the end of this year, referring to the ongoing preparations for the Arab-European Ministerial Meeting, which the Kingdom will host next June.
During the meeting, Safadi and Šuica discussed regional developments and efforts aimed at ending the dangerous escalation in the region.
Safadi called for reaching a solution between the United States and Iran that restores the region's security and stability on the basis of addressing all the previous causes of tension.
The two sides also discussed the situation in Lebanon, as Safadi stressed the need to solidify the ceasefire and support the Lebanese government in its efforts to assert its sovereignty over all Lebanese territory and ensure weapons are "solely in the hands of the state." Additionally, Safadi and Šuica went over the dangerous developments in the occupied Palestinian territories.
Safadi underlined need to stabilize Gaza, ensure the unimpeded and sustainable delivery of aid, and halt illegal Israeli actions in the occupied West Bank, including settlement activity, settler violence, land confiscation, and attempts to alter the historical and legal status quo of Jerusalem's Islamic and Christian holy sites.
Discussing the situation in Syria, the duo affirmed the importance of Syria's stability and security and support for the Syrian government in its reconstruction efforts.
Safadi and Šuica discussed cooperation in ensuring continuation of international support for Syrian refugees to meet their needs, as well as cooperation in creating conditions that would allow for their voluntary return to their homeland.
Safadi valued the EU's support provided to the Kingdom.
The two sides affirmed their commitment to continuing efforts to develop the Jordanian-European partnership and enhance cooperation to serve the common interests and strengthen security and stability in the region.
