New York, Sept. 23 (Petra) -- Minister of Foreign and Expatriates Affairs Ayman Safadi said Israel would continue policies and measures that undermine prospects for peace unless international support for the two-state solution is translated into effective action.

Speaking at a meeting marking one year since the conference that produced the New York Declaration, Safadi warned that while the international community is working toward a just peace, the Israeli government is taking what he described as illegal measures that erode the two-state solution, which he said remains the only path to peace.

Safadi said Israel had shown little regard for the position of the majority of the international community in support of the two-state solution because it had not faced sufficient accountability or deterrent international measures over actions that undermine prospects for peace.

He welcomed the positions of countries that have recognized the State of Palestine and those that have taken measures in response to Israeli policies.

Safadi, however, called for broader and stronger international action to address settlement expansion, land confiscation and the worsening humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

The meeting was organized by France, the United Kingdom, Canada and Saudi Arabia and opened by French President Emmanuel Macron, British Prime Minister Andy Burnham, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres attended the meeting, along with heads of state and representatives of 29 countries and the European Union.
