Amman, April 6 (Petra) -- The Greater Amman Municipality (GAM) has been awarded international ISO certifications for its occupational health, safety, and environmental management systems at the Ghabawi Landfill, marking a significant milestone in the city’s green energy transition.

The municipality received the ISO 45001:2018 certification for occupational health and safety management, alongside the ISO 14001:2015 certification for environmental management. The accreditations specifically cover solid waste treatment and the production of biogas and its conversion into electrical energy at the landfill site.

The Deputy City Manager for Districts and Environmental Affairs said the achievement is the result of a comprehensive institutional project designed to align municipal operations with global standards, including ISO 14001, ISO 45001, and the SA8000 social accountability standard.

The project was implemented through a grant from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD). It involved close coordination between the Solid Waste Treatment and Management Directorate, the Environmental Studies and Projects Directorate, and the Institutional Performance Development Directorate.

The Ghabawi Landfill, located east of the capital, has become a focal point for Jordan’s sustainable development goals. By capturing methane gas from decomposing waste to generate electricity, the facility helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions while providing a renewable energy source for the municipal power grid.

Officials stated that these international certifications validate GAM’s commitment to providing a safe working environment for its staff and adopting best practices in waste-to-energy technology, further enhancing Amman's position as a leader in regional environmental initiatives.
