GCC, OIC praise Jordan's role in Yemen Detainee Exchange Agreement

Amman, May 15 (Petra)-- Secretary-General of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Jasem Mohamed Albudaiwi welcomed the agreement reached on the exchange of detainees in the Republic of Yemen.

Albudaiwi praised Jordan’s efforts in hosting the negotiations, as well as the mediation efforts led by the Office of the United Nations Special Envoy for Yemen and the International Committee of the Red Cross, which contributed to securing the humanitarian agreement, according to the Saudi Press Agency (SPA).

He said the agreement represents a positive step toward alleviating the humanitarian suffering of the Yemeni people and strengthening confidence-building measures between the Yemeni parties.

Albudaiwi reaffirmed the GCC’s support for all regional and international efforts aimed at reaching a comprehensive and sustainable political solution to the Yemeni crisis, based on the three agreed references: the Gulf Initiative and its executive mechanism, the outcomes of the Yemeni National Dialogue Conference, and United Nations Security Council Resolution 2216, in a way that guarantees security and stability for Yemen and its people.

The General Secretariat of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) also welcomed the detainee exchange agreement signed on Thursday in Amman.

The OIC commended the efforts exerted by all parties to achieve the humanitarian breakthrough and expressed hope that the agreement would help ease the suffering of detainees, enhance trust among the parties, and support efforts to fulfill the Yemeni people’s aspirations for peace, security, and stability.

The organization also praised Jordan’s role in hosting the negotiations, along with the efforts of the UN Special Envoy for Yemen and the International Committee of the Red Cross in facilitating the agreement.

In the same context, the foreign ministries of Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Oman, and Bahrain welcomed the agreement on the exchange of detainees in Yemen.

In separate statements, the ministries praised Jordan’s sincere efforts in hosting the talks, as well as the role played by the UN Special Envoy’s Office and the International Committee of the Red Cross.

They also reiterated their full support for all efforts aimed at alleviating the humanitarian suffering of the Yemeni people.
