Amman, October 22 (Petra) – The General Federation of Jordanian Trade Unions (GFJTU), in cooperation with the International Labour Organization (ILO), held a discussion session on Wednesday, themed: "Maternity Protection: Enhancing Maternity Protection for Working Women in Jordan." The session, which is the second in a series organized this month, brought together representatives of government institutions, trade unions, employers, and civil society organizations.
According to a GFJTU statement, the meeting aimed to underscore the social and economic importance of social insurance systems, particularly maternity insurance, and its role in empowering working women.
On other axes, the discussion also reviewed progress, challenges, and opportunities related to maternity protection in labour legislation and examined its link to women’s economic participation and the Economic Modernization Vision.
GFJTU Executive Office member Fathallah Amrani opened the session, which was attended by Reem Aslan, Manager of the Decent Work for Women Program. Discussions focused on maternity protection challenges and social protection mechanisms for working women.
In turn, Mohammad Khreis, Director of the Research and Studies Department at the Social Security Corporation, delivered a presentation on maternity and social insurance, including the "Care" program and support for nursery operating costs.
The session is part of national dialogues held under the "Power of Trade Unions for a More Inclusive and Gender-Equal World of Work" project, implemented in partnership with the Decent Work for Women Program.
The dialogues seek to develop policy recommendations promoting gender equality and decent work and will feed into next month’s national conference on women and international labor standards.
The GFJTU and ILO cooperation falls within the "Equality at Work" project funded by the Government of the Kingdom of Norway.
