Amman, May 20 (Petra) -- Minister of Justice Bassam Talhouni said Jordan continues to strengthen its human rights system in line with Royal directives to institutionalize and develop the national human rights framework at both legislative and procedural levels.
Talhouni made the remarks on Wednesday as he chaired a meeting of the steering committee tasked with drafting a new comprehensive national human rights plan.
The committee, he said, is preparing a draft plan that reflects national priorities within a specific timeframe and clear performance indicators, ensuring that the views of the government, national institutions and stakeholders are taken into account.
The minister said Jordan’s human rights system is a sustained approach grounded in the constitution, national legislation, and existing policies and strategies to promote human rights principles and reinforce them through relevant national and international mechanisms.
Preparing a comprehensive national human rights plan aims to build a more just society through aligning national legislation with international standards, safeguarding public freedoms and equal opportunity, and activating institutional protection mechanisms to address all forms of discrimination and violations, he pointed out.
The meeting discussed the roadmap for drafting the plan, the timeline required to complete the committee’s work, and the achievements of the 2016-2025 Comprehensive National Human Rights Plan, as well as challenges and obstacles encountered during implementation.
