Green Economy Sector Records Key Achievements in Q1 of 2026

Amman, May 24 (Petra) -- A report on the Executive Program of the Economic Modernization Vision (2026–2029) has highlighted major achievements in the green economy sector during the first quarter of the current year.

The report noted that 40 employees were trained on the use of weather information and early warning systems. It also recorded 17,000 violations related to random waste dumping, the installation of 300 mobile cameras on city vehicles, and the collection and sorting of 523 tons of solid waste at source.

In infrastructure developments, the project to upgrade and expand the East Amman Transfer Station has advanced with the approval and commencement of equipment manufacturing, alongside topographic works and the preparation of structural and architectural designs by the contractor, which are currently under review by the consultant and project owner.

Awareness and outreach plans have been prepared for a commercial-sector waste recycling initiative, while a tender has been issued for establishing recycling banks in the Sweifieh area. Technical inquiries from companies regarding a mechanical-biological waste treatment facility have been addressed, with submitted bids currently under evaluation.

The report also outlined progress in waste management and environmental awareness projects, including the assessment of public response to awareness campaigns in Tla’ Al-Ali and Tariq, as well as the launch of a pilot waste management site in Ras Al Ain, featuring container distribution, public awareness activities, and a trial collection system.

Work has also progressed on a marine research and aquarium center project, including the re-tendering of a marina pier, approval of the master plan, and ongoing structural design work. In parallel, climate adaptation initiatives supported by the United Nations Development Programme included field visits to Karak and Madaba to identify 255 eligible beneficiaries for rainwater harvesting wells.

Additional climate resilience efforts included vulnerability assessments in Azraq, Irbid, and Ramtha municipalities, the launch of a tree-planting campaign in Azraq, and the integration of gender equality, inclusion, and empowerment frameworks across project activities.

In the field of meteorology, a data-sharing agreement was signed between the Ministry of Transport and the UK Met Office, enabling the Jordanian Meteorological Department to access high-quality weather data. Awareness workshops were also held in Azraq and Irbid municipalities.

The report further highlighted improvements in integrated waste management, including university awareness campaigns, procurement of biodegradable waste bags and sorting containers, and the rollout of a national cleanliness plan for 2026. Enforcement efforts against illegal dumping have begun, supported by mobile surveillance cameras and improved waste infrastructure in tourist and archaeological sites.

In industrial sustainability, Jordan advanced low-carbon export readiness through green industry initiatives, identified priority sub-sectors under the Zero Waste Challenge, and drafted a circular economy roadmap. Programs were also launched to support startups, integrate persons with disabilities into industry, and develop technical support services for green products.

Finally, the report noted progress in environmental performance, including improved positioning in the global Environmental Performance Index, the launch of a Blue Economy Innovation Center, and continued development of a Circular Economy Creative Center in Aqaba, which has entered the construction phase following contract signing and permit approvals.
