Amman, Dec. 16 (Petra) – The Lower House Foreign Affairs Committee, chaired by MP Haitham Ziyadin, on Tuesday met with Canadian Ambassador to Jordan, Louis Martin, to discuss strengthening bilateral relations and parliamentary cooperation.
According to a committee statement, the meeting addressed several regional and international issues of mutual interest and ways to enhance joint cooperation in the areas of political dialogue, development, and parliamentary exchange.
Talking at the meeting held at the House's headquarters, Ziyadin emphasized Canada's "important" role on the international stage, expressing appreciation for its support of Jordan's positions and recommendations for the protection of Islamic and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem and its support for the Hashemite custodianship over these sanctities.
The lawmaker added this stance reflects Canada's "commitment" to international law, international legitimacy resolutions and its keenness to preserve Jerusalem's historical and legal status quo.
The MP also called for strengthening bilateral relations, particularly in the field of religious tourism, highlighting Jordan's religious and historical significance as a home to numerous holy sites, which presents a "promising" opportunity to develop tourism cooperation, attract visitors and pilgrims from Canada, and enhance cultural exchange between the two nations.
Meanwhile, the committee's members emphasized the importance of expanding cooperation with Canada, particularly in human rights issues, supporting the Palestinian cause, and preserving the status quo in Jerusalem.
The Canadian Ambassador, in turn, expressed his country's appreciation for Jordan's "pivotal" role in supporting security and stability in the region.
The diplomat also affirmed Canada's continued support for Jordanian efforts to achieve regional and international peace and stability, as well as expanding bilateral cooperation in various areas of mutual interest.
Both sides urged continued parliamentary communication and coordination to strengthen bilateral relations, support just causes, and develop cooperation between Jordan and Canada.
