Household Internet Access in Jordan Reached 96.5% in 2024, Survey Reveals

Amman, Jan. 27 (Petra) - The Ministry of Digital Economy and Entrepreneurship announced the results of the 2024 Household Use and Penetration of Communications and Information Technology Survey.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the ministry said the data are essential for measuring progress in digital transformation and identifying existing gaps. The results also contribute to shaping policies and strategies that enhance digital penetration and provide citizens with the skills needed to achieve sustainable development.

The ministry added that the survey serves as a key input for international reports, including those of the International Telecommunication Union, strengthening Jordan’s global standing and reflecting its efforts in the digital field.

The survey showed that the percentage of Jordanian households with home internet service reached 96.5%, exceeding 98% in Amman. The proportion of individuals who used the internet rose from 92.5% in 2023 to 95.6% in 2024, surpassing the global average of 67.6% and the Arab regional average of 69.6%.

It also found that 94.8% of individuals use the internet on a daily basis.

The survey revealed that 97.5% of households owned a smartphone in 2024, compared with 95.7% in 2023.

At the governorate level, smartphone availability in Amman reached 99%, the highest rate among governorates. Average monthly household spending on landline services stood at JD15.2, and on mobile services at JD21.2, compared with JD17.1 for landlines and JD22.6 for mobile phones in 2023.

The results showed an increase in the percentage of households owning a computer to 42.4%, up from 36.4% in 2023. This included laptops at 34.3%, tablets at 21.6%, and desktop computers at 15.2%.

In terms of computer use, 34.7% of individuals reported using computers. The most common digital skills were copy and paste at 79.6%, downloading software at 64.1%, and preparing electronic presentations at 32.4%.

Regarding e-government services, the survey found that 38.1% of individuals had obtained one of these services. Of those, 98.9% said they were easy to use, 99.0% confirmed they were delivered quickly, and 99.3% considered them fully electronic.

The ministry noted that the survey, conducted annually since 2007 in cooperation with the Department of Statistics, included in its 2024 edition a sample of 8,270 households. The data were collected to ensure representation at the national level, across the three regions (north, central and south), and at the governorate level, based on the framework of the 2015 Population and Housing Census.
