Interior Minister calls for action to reduce overcrowding in correctional centers

Amman, Sept. 16 (Petra) -- Minister of Interior Mazen Farraya chaired a meeting of the Higher Committee for Reform and Rehabilitation on Wednesday to discuss strategies for addressing overcrowding in the country's correctional and rehabilitation facilities.

The meeting, held at the Ministry of Interior headquarters in Amman, was attended by Director of the Public Security Directorate (PSD) Maj. Gen. Obeidallah Maaytah alongside secretaries-general from participating ministries.

Farraya stressed the need for enhanced inter-agency coordination to implement rehabilitation strategies, oversee general inmate welfare policies, and maintain humane detention conditions.

He urged officials to examine the root causes and implications of facility overcrowding to develop practical solutions that ease strain on correctional centers and improve operational efficiency.

During the meeting, the director of the PSD's Correctional and Rehabilitation Centers Department delivered a briefing outlining current conditions across facilities and measures to tackle operational challenges.

Committee members reviewed key issues facing the penal system and evaluated action plans to manage inmate capacity, emphasizing the importance of effective interdepartmental cooperation to execute the proposed measures.
