Irbid, April 28 (Petra) -- Head of the Greater Irbid Municipality committee, Imad al-Azzam, emphasized on Tuesday the importance of preserving the city’s historical identity and heritage to strengthen national identity among younger generations.

Azzam announced that the municipality is accelerating the Tell Irbid (Irbid Hill) project, which includes the construction of a public park and the redevelopment of expropriated heritage houses to align with the city's cultural preservation goals.

During a meeting with a delegation from the "Loyalty to Irbid" initiative, Azzam detailed plans to convert one heritage residence into a public library. He also highlighted the upcoming transformation of the Ali Khulqi al-Sharairi house into a political and cultural forum in partnership with Yarmouk University.

Additional restoration projects include returning the Juma’a house to its former status as a heritage hotel in the city center and the renovation of the Joudeh Quarter to be integrated into the Nabulsi house for optimal cultural use.

Regarding infrastructure, Azzam stated that the municipality has launched a study for a comprehensive rehabilitation of the Municipal Stadium in coordination with an international donor. This project involves incorporating adjacent lands and establishing a new training field in the Bushra district.

The official confirmed that the municipality's current financial standing allows for the continued implementation of public services, including road improvements and waste management.

The meeting participants also agreed to rename the city center’s new vegetable market to "Sahat al-Afrah Market," restoring its traditional historical name. The move follows directives from HRH Crown Prince Al Hussein bin Abdullah II to document the Jordanian narrative and preserve the collective memory of the nation's political and social life.
