JCC: Electrical appliances receive 'moderate' demand in local market

Amman, August 15 (Petra) – Representative of the electrical and electronics sector at Jordan Chamber of Commerce (JCC), Hatem Zoubi, stated demand for electrical appliances and lighting sets has been "moderate" since beginning of 2026, compared to previous years.

Zoubi, in a statement to "Petra," said prices of electrical appliances in the local market have remained "stable" despite increased operating costs and expenses, higher transportation and insurance fees, delays in the arrival of goods, and rising prices in the countries of origin due to regional political and security tensions.

He noted that sales of some types of electrical appliances have declined in the local market due to the cessation of credit sales by importers and wholesalers.

He said importers and wholesalers are sometimes forced to sell at cost price to maintain supply and meet the local market's needs for various products.

Affirming availability of goods in "large" quantities, he cited "strong" competition that benefits consumers.

To ensure quality, Zoubi affirmed goods and equipment imported to the Kingdom and the local market meet "high standards and undergo rigorous and continuous" testing procedures and oversight by the Jordan Standards and Metrology Organization, particularly regarding imported electrical appliances and lighting equipment.

Zoubi noted that ongoing cooperation with Jordan Customs Department to facilitate the flow of goods to the local market and expedite transactions.

Additionally, he mentioned coordination with the Ministries of Industry, Trade and Supply, and Energy and Mineral Resources to overcome any obstacles facing the sector's workers.

Zoubi described advertisements on social media as "misleading," indicating price manipulation that has negatively impacted the traditional retail sector.

He said the Kingdom's electrical appliance market is "highly competitive" due to the "diversity" of import sources.

In this context, he also cited the "large number of workers in the sector, exceeding 3,000 merchants in Amman and the governorates, providing approximately 25,000 job opportunities.

He pointed to Jordan Chamber of Commerce's contact with various relevant authorities to address issues and difficulties facing the sector's workers, regulate import and distribution mechanisms, and ensure the availability of high-quality, efficient, and safe goods for citizens, in addition to combating counterfeit products.

He said the electrical and electronics sector is a "cornerstone" of the Kingdom's entire commercial sector, calling for facilitating its operations and overcoming any obstacles facing its activities.
