Amman, Sept. 21 (Petra) - Royal Committee for Jerusalem Affairs Secretary-General Abdullah Kanaan on Monday decried Israeli incursions into Jerusalem’s Old City, Al-Aqsa Mosque, and the Western Wall Plaza.
Incursions by Israeli officials, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, along with thousands of settlers under tight police guard, are an "unprecedented escalation and a flagrant violation" of Islamic holy sites, Kanaan told Petra in an interview.
Kanaan warned that performing Talmudic rituals inside Al-Aqsa during the so-called "Yom Kippur" is a direct attack on its Islamic identity. He added that combined with police lockdowns, these acts turn Old City neighborhoods into military barracks and systematically attempt to alter Jerusalem's historic status quo.
Declaring that peace cannot rest on "the law of the jungle," Kanaan urged global action to protect holy sites, pointing to UNESCO resolutions considering the entire 144-dunum Al-Aqsa compound as an exclusively Muslim site, and rejecting efforts to rewrite history.
He stressed that Jordan, under His Majesty King Abdullah II, will maintain the Hashemite Custodianship over Jerusalem's holy sites and oppose any unilateral changes to the city's identity.
