Amman, June 22 (Petra) - Speaker of the Jordanian House of Parliament, Mazen Qadi, held talks on Monday with the Speaker of the National Assembly of Azerbaijan, Sahiba Gafarova, ahead of the opening of the Parliamentary Union of the OIC Member States (PUIC), focusing on strengthening parliamentary and broader relations.
Both sides pointed to Jordan and Azerbaijan's deep ties rooted in mutual respect and shared interests under the leadership of His Majesty King Abdullah II and President Ilham Aliyev.
The speakers emphasized converging positions on key regional and international issues, sharing commitments to moderation, dialogue, and peaceful resolution for regional and global stability.
Parliamentary cooperation, Qadi said, should move beyond traditional frameworks toward an institutional partnership supporting economic and development-focused legislation, while also strengthening coordination in regional and international parliamentary forums.
He called for the establishment of permanent joint mechanisms, including specialized committees focused on economic legislation and the exchange of legislative expertise. He noted the importance of parliamentary diplomacy in aligning positions within the PUIC and other international bodies, particularly to support the Palestinian cause.
He stressed closer cooperation between economic committees to harmonize investment-related legislation, facilitate trade, and encourage private sector partnerships that could boost economic exchange and development outcomes for Amman and Baku.
Gafarova, for her part, pointed to Azerbaijan’s commitment to expanding cooperation with Jordan across various sectors.
She described Jordan as an important partner in the region, noting the need to expand parliamentary cooperation through exchanges of visits in fields such as economic legislation, digital transformation, and sustainable development.
Commending Jordan’s positions in support of dialogue and regional cooperation, Gafarova stressed the importance of continued coordination in international and PUIC forums to advance shared interests and promote stability and development.
She welcomed Jordanian proposals to establish permanent institutional frameworks for parliamentary cooperation, expressing readiness to elevate ties into a more advanced strategic partnership.
