Amman, July 22 (Petra) -- Official data released by the Department of Statistics shows a 5.4 percent increase in the total number of building permits issued across the Kingdom during the first five months of the current year, reaching 10,104 permits compared to 9,585 during the same period in 2025.

Total licensed building area rose slightly to approximately 3.985 million square meters, compared to 3.983 million square meters in the corresponding period last year. Licensed residential space increased by 13 percent to reach 3.373 million square meters, accounting for 85 percent of all licensed space. Conversely, non-residential licensed space declined by 39 percent to 612,000 square meters.

However, licensed space allocated specifically for new construction and additions dropped by 14 percent, totaling 2.242 million square meters compared to 2.606 million square meters during the same period in 2025. Geographically, the Central Region represented 72 percent of total licensed area, followed by the Northern Region at 22 percent, and the Southern Region at 6 percent.

Commenting on the figures, Majed Ghousheh, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Jordanian Housing Developers Association, stated that the growth in licensed residential space reflects sustained investor confidence following recent regulatory reforms. He highlighted that amendments to building codes in Amman, extended deadlines for resolving building code violations, and administrative fee reductions encouraged property owners to legalize existing structures.

Ghousheh noted that while legalizing existing buildings enhances urban compliance, expansion in new construction remains the primary driver of new housing supply. To sustain momentum, he called for additional measures to accelerate permit approvals, reduce administrative costs, and introduce investment incentives to encourage real estate development outside the Central Region.
