Amman, June 22 (Petra) -- Minister of Agriculture Saeb Khraisat said Monday that the year's field crops season is promising, with positive production results in wheat and barley, , according to a ministry statement. Khraisat said the government allocated JD45 million to purchase local crops from farmers, compared with JD19 million in 2025 as part of efforts to support domestic production and strengthen food security.
He added that the government buys wheat and barley at more than double the global market prices to encourage farmers to expand strategic crop cultivation and increase national reserves.
Khraisat estimated production for the current season at 100,000 to 110,000 tons, marking an increase compared with previous years and reflecting supportive agricultural policies and expanded cultivation.
Regarding recent fires in agricultural areas, the minister said that the fires had a minimal impact on output, accounting for 0.2 per cent of total production. The ministry, in coordination with relevant authorities, investigated the incidents and took necessary measures.
Khraisat said the ministry would continue implementing programmes to support field crops, including incentives for farmers to expand wheat and barley cultivation as part of national food security priorities.
