Jordan Opens Ambient Air Quality Monitoring Station at Queen Alia International Airport

Amman, Jan 6 (Petra) - Minister of Environment Ayman Suleiman on Tuesday inaugurated an ambient air quality monitoring station at Queen Alia International Airport.

The move reflects the government’s commitment to strengthening the national environmental monitoring system and consolidating effective public-private partnerships in environmental protection and improving air quality.

The station was inaugurated following the completion of direct electronic linkage with the Ministry of Environment’s national ambient air quality monitoring network, ensuring the provision of accurate, real-time data that contribute to assessing pollution levels and sources and supporting science-based environmental decision-making.

Suleiman said operating the station constitutes a qualitative leap in the environmental monitoring system, given the continuous monitoring it provides and the establishment of a reliable scientific database. He noted that integrating it into the national network enhances transparency and supports public health protection and improved quality of life.

The station represents the outcome of a strategic partnership with Airport International Group (AIG), operator of Queen Alia International Airport, which replaced the previous station with a modern, high-technology unit equipped with internationally accredited monitoring systems to measure air pollutants and meteorological elements and capable of full integration with the national system.

For his part, Airport International Group CEO Nicolas Deviller said the inauguration reflects the group’s commitment to applying the highest environmental sustainability standards, noting that investment in advanced monitoring systems enhances transparency, supports data-driven environmental management, and contributes to reducing the environmental impact of airport operations.

During a field visit, Suleiman reviewed key environmental sustainability projects at the airport, including the development of a wastewater treatment plant and reuse of treated water, emissions reduction through conversion to natural gas, waste sorting programs, and solar energy projects with a capacity of about 4.8 megawatts, contributing around 25 percent of the airport’s electricity consumption.

Both sides stressed the importance of continued cooperation to promote the transition toward a green economy, support national environmental protection efforts, and achieve sustainable development goals.
