Amman, Nov. 7 (Petra)-- Minister of Environment, Ayman Suleiman, delivered the Kingdom’s national statement before the 30th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP30), held in Belém, Brazil, in the presence of world leaders and representatives from participating states.
At the outset of his remarks, Suleiman conveyed the greetings of His Majesty King Abdullah II and expressed Jordan’s appreciation to the Federation Republic of Brazil and the people of Belém for hosting the conference.
The minister stressed that the world today stands at a critical moment marked by a retreat in the spirit of international solidarity. He noted that the Middle East is directly experiencing the impacts of climate change from rising temperatures and diminishing water resources to deteriorating ecosystems coupled with worsening humanitarian crises and conflicts that further weaken community resilience.
Suleiman highlighted that despite limited resources and the burdens of hosting refugees, Jordan remains firmly committed to effective climate action. He recalled His Majesty King Abdullah II’s initiative on the "Climate–Refugee Nexus," launched at COP27, which continues to gain growing international momentum.
The minister also outlined Jordan’s progress in transitioning to renewable energy, noting that solar and wind power now cover more than a quarter of the Kingdom’s electricity needs. He reviewed additional national efforts, including wastewater reuse, sustainable agriculture, ecosystem restoration, the development of green hydrogen projects, and regional partnerships aimed at supporting a just transition to a green economy.
Suleiman called on the international community to ensure that the new collective quantified goal for climate finance upholds the principles of fairness, transparency, and accountability, and prioritizes the most vulnerable countries especially refugee-hosting nations such as Jordan.
He emphasized that climate action is inseparable from peacebuilding, stating, "Sustainability cannot flourish amid conflict, and peace cannot endure in the face of climate collapse." He urged the adoption of an integrated approach that connects climate, peace, and human dignity.
Suleiman concluded by reaffirming Jordan’s readiness to work with all regional and international partners to develop evidence-based, practical solutions, rebuild trust in multilateralism, and promote tangible results, fair financing, and shared responsibility.
