Jordan records 35% quarterly surge in 5G subscriptions

Amman, July 6 (Petra) - 5G mobile subscriptions in the Kingdom surged to 433,400 during the first quarter of 2026, according to data released Monday by the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (TRC).

This marks a 35% increase from the 320,700 subscriptions recorded in the final quarter of 2025 and a 95% jump, compared to the 221,900 reported in the same period last year.

Fixed-line voice subscriptions dropped annually from 484,000 to about 465,000 in Q1. Of the current subscriptions, the market share is split between residential users at 68% and business customers at 32%, according to the TRC’s latest quarterly telecommunications data.

Fixed broadband subscriptions increased 1.3% year over year to 829,000, with household penetration reaching 33.2%.

Fixed-line voice traffic fell 22.7% to 7.5 million minutes from 9.7 million minutes in the first quarter of 2025. Domestic calls accounted for 81% of total traffic, while international calls made up the remaining 19%.

Mobile broadband subscriptions rose 3.4% year over year to 8.3 million. Prepaid plans accounted for 62% of subscriptions, with postpaid plans accounting for 38%. Combined voice-and-data subscriptions made up 79% of the total, while data-only subscriptions were 21%.

Mobile voice traffic reached 6.3 billion minutes during the quarter, with 97% of calls made domestically and 3% internationally. SMS usage continued to decline, falling 59% year over year to 173 million messages from 422.9 million.

Mobile subscription penetration reached 68.6% of Jordan's total population at the end of the first quarter, up slightly from 68.4% a year earlier. Among residents aged 15 and older, penetration stood at 105.5%.

Mobile broadband data consumption climbed 25% year over year to 844 million gigabytes.

Fiber-optic connections continued to dominate the fixed broadband market, accounting for 79.6% of subscriptions, or about 660,000 connections. Fixed broadband wireless access (FBWA) represented 15.3% of subscriptions, while xDSL accounted for 4.8%.

Fixed broadband data usage rose 21.4% year over year to 1.7 billion gigabytes. Average monthly data consumption per fixed broadband subscription increased to 700 GB, up from 575 GB a year earlier.

Meanwhile, leased-line subscriptions edged down 0.8% to 24,300 at the end of the first quarter, compared with 24,500 a year earlier.
