Amman, Dec. 16 (Petra) – The Secretary-General of the Jordan Valley Authority, Hisham Hayaseh, and the Regional Director of the International Water Management Institute for the Middle East and North Africa, Youssef Brouziyne, signed an agreement on Tuesday to adopt an advanced digital tool for diagnosing and evaluating sustainable irrigation performance in the Northern Jordan Valley. The tool, WaPOR, utilizes satellite data and was developed in collaboration with the Institute.

According to the Ministry of Water and Irrigation, the adoption of WaPOR aligns with the Jordan Valley Authority's commitment to integrating sustainable digital solutions and modern innovations, leveraging artificial intelligence and remote sensing data in water resource management. The tool is expected to improve water use efficiency, optimize operational planning, enhance equitable water distribution, and reduce waste.

The Ministry noted that during its development and testing phase, WaPOR demonstrated the ability to transform satellite data into precise, actionable indicators that support informed decision-making and provide a comprehensive understanding of water use patterns and irrigation efficiency, in line with the objectives of Jordan's National Water Strategy.

Hayaseh described the adoption of the tool as a pivotal step in the Authority's digital transformation, enabling a qualitative leap in irrigation management through accurate data and reliable scientific indicators. He emphasized that its implementation will enhance water productivity, strengthen the resilience of the agricultural sector, and improve farmers’ livelihoods.

He added that the Jordan Valley Authority remains committed to digital innovation and international collaboration to tackle water scarcity and climate challenges, ensuring efficient and transparent management of the irrigation sector.
