Jordan’s regional policy anchored in moderation, support for Palestinian cause, MP says

Amman, May 3 (Petra) -- First Deputy Speaker of the Lower House of Parliament Khamis Attieh said the country’s regional principles form a firmly established political approach led by His Majesty King Abdullah II, based on moderation and support for Arab causes foremost the Palestinian issue while safeguarding national interests and internal stability.

Speaking at a lecture titled "Jordan’s Regional Principles," organized by the Cultural Forum Society/General Assembly of Hebron Governorate and hosted by Halhoul Association, Attieh said these principles serve as a compass guiding Jordan’s positions amid rapid regional transformations.

He highlighted the depth of Jordanian-Palestinian relations, describing them as extending beyond geography to a shared identity and destiny, and said these historic ties underpin Jordan’s stance on regional issues.

Attieh said the country’s principles reflect not just immediate political positions but also a comprehensive strategic vision, consolidated over the years by His Majesty King Abdullah, based on balance, openness, and the ability to address evolving challenges. He pointed to the growing role of Crown Prince Hussein bin Abdullah in advancing this vision with a modern, youth-driven approach that strengthens Jordan’s presence on regional and international platforms.

He stressed that the Palestinian issue remains central to these principles, describing it as a matter of rights, justice and identity. He said Jordan remains committed to supporting the Palestinian people’s right to establish an independent state on their national soil with Jerusalem as its capital, rejecting any attempts at resettlement or imposed solutions at its expense, and upholding the right of return.

Attieh said the Hashemite custodianship over Islamic and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem represents a historic trust and ongoing responsibility through which Jordan continues to protect these sites against violations.

He said Jordan has maintained a firm commitment to international legitimacy, adopting dialogue and political solutions to address crises, which has enabled it to play a balanced and rational role in the region and build bridges between different parties away from polarization.

Attieh added that Jordan’s foreign policy is based on moderation and balanced diplomacy, preserving the independence of national decision-making and strengthening the kingdom’s standing.

He said Jordan’s stability, despite surrounding crises, is the result of prudent policies and strong national institutions, led by the armed forces and security agencies, which play a key role in protecting borders and safeguarding national security, noting that such stability underpins any effective regional role.

Attieh also highlighted the humanitarian dimension of Jordan’s policy, noting that the kingdom has provided an advanced model in dealing with refugee crises despite economic challenges, reflecting the values of Jordanian society and enhancing the country’s moral standing internationally.

On the domestic front, he stressed that national cohesion is the cornerstone of successful foreign policy, saying unity among Jordanians, their support for the Hashemite leadership, and trust in state institutions form the foundation of stability.

He underscored the role of parliament, political elites and civil society institutions in strengthening institutional work and political life, adding that Jordan’s ability to adapt to regional and international changes without compromising its principles reflects political maturity in crisis management.

Attieh said the reform process led by His Majesty King Abdullah is an integral part of these principles, aimed at strengthening a modern civil state, upholding the rule of law, expanding political participation, empowering political parties and developing parliamentary life, thereby enhancing the country’s resilience.

He also noted HRH the Crown Prince’s role in supporting these efforts by engaging with young people and encouraging their participation in public life, describing youth as the foundation of the future and investment in their potential as key to sustaining reform and stability.

Attieh said Jordan’s regional principles are not merely slogans but a comprehensive system of values and guidelines shaping state policy, strengthening the country’s role, and reaffirming its commitment to Arab causes, foremost the Palestinian issue and Jerusalem and its holy sites.
