New York, May 20 (Petra) – Jordan's Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Waleed Obeidat, on Wednesday announced that Jordan will host a high-level international conference in Amman on December 7, 2026, under the title "Humanity in War," aimed at strengthening the implementation of international humanitarian law.

Obeidat made the announcement during a joint statement delivered at a press briefing ahead of the UN Security Council’s annual open debate on the "Protection of Civilians in Armed Conflict," held under the presidency of China.

The briefing was attended by a large number of permanent representatives and delegates from member states and supporting countries across various regional groups.

The statement was issued on behalf of the founding states of the Global Initiative to Mobilise Political Commitment to International Humanitarian Law Jordan, Brazil, China, France, Kazakhstan and South Africa in partnership with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).

It was supported by 89 countries, as well as the ICRC and the European Union, reflecting growing international backing for the initiative, which seeks to promote respect for international humanitarian law and enhance civilian protection in armed conflict.

Obeidat said the Amman conference will represent the culmination of the initiative’s work and global consultations, with the aim of producing practical recommendations to strengthen compliance with international humanitarian law on the ground.

The initiative was launched in September 2024 by the six founding states in cooperation with the ICRC to mobilise political commitment to the rules of war amid rising challenges to the protection of civilians.

According to organisers, 111 countries have joined the initiative to date.
