Amman, Oct. 13 (Petra) - Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Fuad Majali said on Tuesday that Jordan's election to the UN Human Rights Council showcases global appreciation for the Kingdom's leadership under His Majesty King Abdullah II in protecting and promoting human rights.
Jordan secured 171 votes in a secret ballot during the 81st session of the UN General Assembly in New York.
Majali said that Jordan will leverage its upcoming tenure to collaborate with member states in boosting the international human rights system, upholding the rule of law, and safeguarding the rights of women, children, persons with disabilities and other vulnerable populations.
He added that the seat will provide a "vital platform" to advocate for the rights of the Palestinian people, chief among them the right to self-determination and an independent state along the June 4, 1967 lines with East Jerusalem as its capital, while addressing continuous international law violations.
Expressing gratitude to the countries that supported Jordan's candidacy, Majali noted that the outcome displays the Kingdom's standing in multilateral diplomacy and its commitment to dialogue and global cooperation. He congratulated other nations elected to the council.
Headquartered in Geneva, the 47-member Human Rights Council was established by the General Assembly in 2006 to promote and protect human rights worldwide, address violations, and issue actionable recommendations.
