Amman, May 4 (Petra) -- The Jordan Standards and Metrology Organization (JSMO) has brought into service a portable X-ray fluorescence (XRF) device to inspect precious metals at gold jewelry shops, as part of efforts to upgrade inspection tools and ensure jewelry meets legal karat standards.
The device can analyze precious metal components and determine purity levels and legal karat standards accurately within seconds, without taking samples or damaging inspected items through non-destructive testing, JSMO said in a statement on Monday.
It said the device provides fast and reliable results, reducing the time and effort in field inspections.
Introducing the technology will enhance the efficiency of field oversight by allowing inspectors to immediately verify the legal karat standard of jewelry displayed in shops or held by distributors in workshops, said the organization.
The technology will also give consumers greater confidence when buying gold, silver, and platinum, supporting trust in the local market and improving the quality of traded products, the statement added.
JSMO first-quarter data pointed to a robust jewelry sector, with the organization handling nearly 49.6 tons of gold and silver jewelry, while inspection and oversight visits covered 128 workshops and commercial outlets across the Kingdom.
