Amman, Oct. 13 (Petra) -- Minister of Justice, Dr. Bassam Al-Talhouni, affirmed that combating human trafficking remains a top national priority and a key pillar in strengthening the country’s human rights system. His remarks came during a workshop organized on Monday by the Information and Research Center on Combating Human Trafficking at the King Hussein Foundation, with the participation of several national institutions and international organizations.

Al-Talhouni emphasized that the government places particular importance on fighting human trafficking, reflecting its firm commitment to protecting human rights and preserving human dignity. He commended the efforts of the National Committee for Combating Human Trafficking in advancing legislative and procedural mechanisms to confront this crime and protect vulnerable groups from exploitation.

The minister highlighted the significance of the Anti-Human Trafficking Law of 2009 and its subsequent amendments, noting that the legislation provides a robust legal framework for addressing trafficking-related offenses. The law, he said, enforces stricter penalties to ensure perpetrators are held accountable and guarantees victims access to legal, social, and psychological support services.

Al-Talhouni also noted that dedicating specialized judicial bodies to handle trafficking cases has strengthened justice delivery and improved coordination between the Public Prosecution’s specialized units and the Anti-Human Trafficking Unit. This collaboration, he explained, has enhanced evidence collection and facilitated early identification and protection of potential victims.

He further pointed to the 2021 amendments to the Anti-Human Trafficking Law, which introduced the establishment of a Victims Support Fund under Regulation No. (6) of 2023. The fund aims to provide comprehensive assistance to victims, including safe housing and voluntary repatriation, underscoring the state’s continued commitment to upholding its responsibilities in this area.

Al-Talhouni underlined that the National Committee continues to strengthen cooperation with both national and international partners through capacity-building initiatives and knowledge exchange programs. The current workshop, he said, reflects Jordan’s participatory approach to combating human trafficking and enhancing national response mechanisms.

He added that the Committee holds regular consultative meetings with stakeholders to review recommendations and ensure policy coherence within a unified national vision. This vision, he explained, is grounded in coordination between government agencies and civil society organizations and aligns with the National Strategy and Action Plan to Combat Human Trafficking (2024–2027).

Jordan launched the national strategy at the end of last year to reinforce protection, care, and assistance frameworks for victims. The initiative represents a major achievement for the National Committee for Combating Human Trafficking, chaired by the Minister of Justice and composed of senior representatives from key ministries, the National Center for Human Rights, and the National Council for Family Affairs, along with other relevant institutions.
