King, Palestinian president discuss situation in Palestinian territories

Amman, April 28 (Petra) -- His Majesty King Abdullah II held a meeting with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on Tuesday, during which they discussed the overall situation in the Palestinian territories.

During the meeting, attended by His Royal Highness Crown Prince Al Hussein bin Abdullah II, His Majesty asserted that the region will not attain stability unless Palestinians are granted their full legitimate rights and an independent Palestinian state is established, on the basis of the two-state solution.

The King reiterated Jordan’s rejection of Israeli measures aimed at exploiting the situation in the region to create new facts on the ground in Jerusalem, the West Bank, and Gaza, underscoring the Kingdom’s determination to rally effective international support in this regard.

The meeting also covered the gravity of unilateral measures in the West Bank, with His Majesty stressing the need to step up international efforts to halt illegal actions aimed at entrenching settlements and imposing Israeli sovereignty over the West Bank.

Speaking about the violations of Muslim and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem, the King affirmed that Jordan will continue to fulfil its historic role in safeguarding these holy sites, under the Hashemite Custodianship.

His Majesty also reiterated the need to ensure that sufficient relief aid reaches all areas of Gaza in order to alleviate the humanitarian suffering in the Strip.

The King reaffirmed his support for the Palestinian National Authority’s reform efforts that serve the interests of the Palestinian people.

The two leaders also emphasised the deep-rooted ties between the two countries and their peoples, and the need to continue coordination and consultation, in service of shared interests and Arab causes.

President Abbas praised Jordan’s ongoing efforts, under the leadership of His Majesty, to rally international support for the Palestinian cause and defend the rights of Palestinians.

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi, General Intelligence Department Director Maj. Gen. Ahmad Husni, and Director of the Office of His Majesty Alaa Batayneh attended the meeting.

On the Palestinian side, Deputy Chairman of the Palestine Liberation Organisation and Vice-President Hussein Sheikh, Head the Palestinian General Intelligence Service Maj. Gen. Majed Faraj, Diplomatic Advisor to President Mahmoud Abbas Majdi Khaldi, and Palestine’s Ambassador to Jordan Attalla Khairi attended the meeting.
