Amman, Dec. 30 (Petra) - Jordan is caught in a brief atmospheric intermission Tuesday as the Kingdom recovers from a powerful storm that lashed the country on Monday. While the intense downpours and 100km/h wind gusts that characterized yesterday’s peak activity have begun to subside, meteorologists warn that the respite will be short-lived, with a new cold front already looming on the horizon.

Tuesday will see a slight uptick in temperatures, though they remain below the seasonal average. The morning hours may still witness lingering light showers in the northern and central regions - a remnant of the moisture-heavy system that flooded streets in Amman and triggered flash flood warnings in the southern governorates of Karak and Tafilah yesterday.

Authorities have issued a series of warnings regarding dense fog blanketing the high altitudes, plains, and eastern Badia. This follows a Monday where visibility in parts of the capital plummeted to nearly zero.

Additionally, frost remains a threat during the early morning and late-night hours, particularly over the Shara mountains.

While Wednesday is expected to offer a modest rise in temperatures and a break in the clouds, the reprieve serves as a lead-up to another weather event. On Thursday, the Kingdom is set to be impacted by a cold and moist air mass associated with a low-pressure system currently forming over Cyprus.

This incoming system is expected to bring a sharp drop in temperatures and rain across the northern regions by Thursday afternoon, eventually extending to the center and east. Forecasters anticipate the heaviest rainfall during Thursday night, which could be accompanied by thunderstorms and hail. Southwesterly winds are expected to surge again, with gusts reaching 60km/h, likely kicking up dust in the desert areas before the front fully transitions into a wet pattern by Friday.

Temperatures in the capital today are expected to fluctuate between a high of 11 C and a low of 5 C, while the northern highlands will remain significantly colder. In contrast, the Dead Sea and Aqaba will maintain relatively mild conditions with highs of 21 C and 23 C respectively, providing the only warmth in an otherwise biting winter week.
