Amman, Feb. 10 (Petra) -- The General Federation of Jordanian Trade Unions (GFJTU) is taking part in a regional workshop on financing a "just transition" to a low-carbon, climate-resilient economy in the Middle East and North Africa, focusing on how to fund climate and green industrial policies while protecting jobs, skills pathways, and social protection for workers.

The two-day workshop is organized by the Arab Trade Union Confederation (ATUC), in cooperation with the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC), in Amman.

It brings together labor unions and international federations from Jordan, Iraq, Lebanon, Algeria, and Morocco, alongside representatives of international organizations and research institutions, to discuss climate transition pathways and worker-centered green industrial policy across national, regional, and international contexts.

In opening remarks, GFJTU President Khaled Fanatsah said Jordan’s hosting of the workshop reflects confidence in the role of the Jordanian trade union movement as a key national partner in strengthening social dialogue, defending workers’ rights, and contributing to policymaking related to sustainable development and the green economy.

He said rapid shifts in energy policy and production models pose tangible challenges for workers, particularly regarding job stability, skills requirements, and social protection. He stressed that the concept of a "just transition" provides the most effective framework to ensure these shifts are socially equitable, protect workers’ rights, and generate decent and sustainable employment.

ATUC Executive Secretary Hind Benammar said the climate transition in the Arab region is neither a purely technical option nor a political luxury, but fundamentally a matter of social justice.

The workshop’s agenda includes the international financial architecture for climate transition, the role of multilateral development banks, the debt crisis, strategies to safeguard workers’ rights in internationally financed projects, and union-led national experiences on how climate policies affect labor markets.
