Amman, April 1 (Petra) – Lower House (LH) Agriculture and Water Committee, chaired by MP Dr. Ahmed Shdeifat, met on Wednesday with representatives of the Regional Competence Center for Energy and Climate Justice at Friedrich Ebert Stiftung (FES) Middle East and North Africa (MENA) to discuss ways to enhance social protection for workers in the agricultural sector.

According to a committee statement, Shdeifat called for developing the social protection system in this vital sector, which is linked to food security and sustainable development.

Shdeifat stressed the need to provide a "comprehensive" social security and health insurance umbrella to ensure improved working conditions and enhanced job stability.

He noted the climate-related challenges facing the sector require intensifying national efforts and strengthening cooperation with global partners to reach "practical and sustainable" solutions to support workers.

Meanwhile, the committee's members called for strengthening the legislative frameworks that regulate activities of the agricultural sector, protect workers' rights, provide a safe and stable work environment, and expand scope of social protection to include all categories.

In turn, the center's representatives reviewed the key studies and experiences on linking agriculture with climate justice and energy, noting the importance of adopting "comprehensive" policies that take into account the challenges facing the sector's workers.

During the meeting, the two sides discussed mechanisms for joint cooperation and exchange of expertise to support national efforts to enhance social protection and improve worker living standards in the agricultural sector.

This scenario comes within the framework of achieving sustainable and inclusive development that integrates economic, social, and environmental aspects.
