Amman, August 9 (Petra) –Head of the Lower House (LH) Energy and Mineral Resources Committee, Ayman Abu Hanieh, called for intensifying monitoring and inspection campaigns at fuel stations and increasing penalties for tampering with fuel quality.

The MP's call came during a committee meeting held on Sunday to discuss citizens' complaints regarding increased gasoline evaporation and higher consumption rates in vehicles.

Talking at the discussions, Abu Hanieh stated the meeting was convened amid "numerous" complaints sent to the committee on this matter.

Abu Hanieh added that citizens are expressing current problems that require follow-up and investigation, calling for taking deterrent measures against violators, mainly given the current economic conditions, rising fuel prices, and limited income of citizens.

For his part, the Chairman of Energy and Minerals Regulatory Commission (EMRC), Ziad Sa'aydeh, noted that naphtha has been imported without oversight since 2023.

He confirmed cases of gasoline adulteration have been detected, indicating that the commission monitors fuel stocks and has closed 12 stations since the beginning of the year.

On measures taken against violating stations, he said steps include closure and sealing for a month and suspending their fuel supply for a similar period.

Meanwhile, Wafa'a Momani, from Jordan Standards and Metrology Organization (JSMO), said the organization has conducted 3,453 inspection tours in 2026 and closed 3 stations yesterday.

She added that the organization conducted 130 inspection tours during the past 3 days and examined 35 samples.

The results showed only two irregularities, which were represented by the percentage of ethanol exceeding the specified limit of 5%, he pointed out.

In the two violating samples, he said the percentage ranged between 6-7%, noting that some cases of adulteration were detected.
