Amman, May 7 (Petra) -- Acting Speaker of the Lower House Dr. Khamis Atiyeh said the House supports all national efforts aimed at protecting children and adolescents from harmful digital content and promoting a safe and responsible online environment amid rapidly evolving digital challenges.
Atiyeh made the remarks while chairing part of a meeting of the House Digital Economy and Entrepreneurship Committee, headed by MP Moayad Alawneh.
The discussions sought to follow up on procedures for blocking dangerous e-games after approving a ban on pornographic websites.
The meeting also discussed the response of the Ministry of Digital Economy and Entrepreneurship on proposals to regulate social media use among younger age groups.
Talking at the meeting, Atiyeh said protecting society requires developing legislation and oversight measures in line with technological advances, while maintaining a balance to safeguard society and uphold freedoms within the framework of the law.
Praising the ministry’s cooperation with the committee, he expressed hope to review details of measures taken to limit access to inappropriate content for minors.
He stressed the importance of coordination between the Kingdom's legislative and executive authorities to reach "feasible and sustainable" solutions that strengthen societal resilience, preserve community values and raise family and educational awareness.
For his part, Alawneh said the committee is continuing procedures to block dangerous e-games and follow up on implementing the decision to ban pornographic websites, citing threats posed to children, families and societal security.
He added that the committee is also examining mechanisms to regulate children’s use of social media in coordination with relevant authorities.
He ststed this effort is part of efforts to provide a safe digital environment and enhance social protection, in line with Royal directives to keep pace with technological development in a safe and responsible manner.
MPs, in turn, called for completing procedures for blocking dangerous electronic and gambling games, as well as establishing clear regulatory frameworks for social media use by younger age groups to strengthen community protection and ensure a safe digital environment.
