Amman, April 13 (Petra) -- The Lower House of Parliament on Monday approved, by majority vote, a draft amendment to the Civil Status Law of 2026, aimed at accelerating digital transformation and enhancing public sector efficiency.

The amendments introduce the digital identity card as an official electronic equivalent of the national ID, granting it full legal validity and requiring both public and private sector entities to recognize it in formal transactions.

The legislation also streamlines administrative procedures by reducing statutory deadlines and financial penalties associated with the loss of official documents. It further replaces the guarantee system with financial undertakings.

In addition, the amendments mandate that all Jordanians aged 18 and above register their residential and digital mailing addresses and update them whenever changes occur.

The revised law seeks to facilitate secure and reliable electronic service delivery, strengthen data governance frameworks, and align administrative processes with ongoing technological advancements.
