Mayor talks Amman’s smart city progress at UCLG World Congress

Amman, June 24 (Petra) – Amman Mayor Yousef Shawarbeh said on Wednesday that the Greater Amman Municipality's (GAM) digital transformation improved public services, reduced bureaucracy, and strengthened citizen engagement.

At the eighth Congress of United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG) World Congress in Tangier, Morocco, Shawarbeh added that GAM launched a comprehensive digital transformation program in 2017. He said that GAM redesigned internal processes, upgraded technical infrastructure, expanded electronic payment systems, and enabled remote service delivery. In 2021, it became the first institution in Jordan to digitize all its services, according to Shawarbeh.

GAM provides 154 electronic services, including 18 fully integrated end-to-end digital services. It offers electronic archiving systems, AI-powered applications, and integrated licensing, permitting, and inspection platforms linked to geographic information systems and urban data.

Shawarbeh pointed to the Amman Smart City Strategy, which focuses on smart mobility, digital governance, and data-driven urban management. Key initiatives include Jordan’s first contactless payment system for the BRT and city buses, real-time traffic monitoring, automated parking systems, and electric vehicle charging infrastructure.

He added that GAM’s digital participation platform, Amman is Listening, enables residents to access local services, submit feedback, and help shape municipal priorities, particularly during emergencies and crises.

The digital transformation program has reduced paperwork, lowered operating costs, and minimized in-person visits, improving efficiency and service delivery, according to the mayor.

He added that GAM efforts earned international recognition, with Amman becoming the first capital city to receive the BSI Kitemark certification under the ISO 37106 standard for smart and sustainable cities, while continuing to advance in the IMD Smart City Index.
